E-commerce platform migration (Magento to Shopify, WooCommerce to BigCommerce, etc.) is necessary when your current platform limits growth. But poorly executed migrations lose 10-30% of organic traffic and revenue.

Migration planning: document everything on the current platform, including products, categories, customers, orders, content pages, URL structure, redirects, integrations, and customizations. This inventory guides the entire project.

Data migration priority: products (with all variants, images, and metadata), customers (with order history), active orders, gift card balances, and loyalty points. Historical completed orders can remain in the old system.

SEO preservation: map every URL from the old platform to the new platform. Implement 301 redirects for every changed URL. Product URLs, category URLs, blog URLs, and content pages all need redirects.

Design and UX migration: resist the temptation to redesign everything simultaneously. Migrate the current design first, stabilize, then iterate on design improvements. Changing platform and design simultaneously doubles risk.

Integration migration: identify all third-party integrations (payment gateways, shipping, email marketing, analytics, ERP) and verify compatibility with the new platform. Some integrations require replacement.

Testing protocol: test every product page, checkout flow, payment method, shipping calculation, tax calculation, discount code, and email notification on the new platform before go-live.

Go-live timing: migrate during your lowest-traffic period (typically January-February for most retailers). Never migrate during holiday season. Choose a weekday for go-live when your team is fully available.

DNS and SSL: pre-configure SSL certificates on the new platform. Plan DNS changes to minimize downtime. Monitor for mixed content warnings and broken assets after DNS propagation.

Post-migration monitoring: watch analytics daily for 4 weeks. Compare traffic, conversion rate, and revenue to pre-migration baselines. Monitor Google Search Console for crawl errors and ranking changes. Address issues immediately.
