GraphQL and REST are not competing standards. They solve different problems. REST maps HTTP methods to resources. GraphQL provides a query language for flexible data fetching.
REST strengths: simplicity, widespread understanding, excellent caching via HTTP, works with any client, and straightforward implementation. REST is the right default for most APIs.
GraphQL strengths: precise data fetching (no over/under-fetching), single endpoint, strong typing with introspection, real-time subscriptions, and excellent developer tooling.
When REST excels: simple CRUD APIs, public APIs (broad client compatibility), file uploads, and APIs where caching is critical. REST's HTTP caching is simpler and more effective.
When GraphQL excels: complex data relationships (social networks, content systems), mobile apps (minimize network requests), and applications where frontend teams need data flexibility without backend changes.
Performance comparison: REST can over-fetch (sending unnecessary data) or under-fetch (requiring multiple requests). GraphQL sends exactly what is requested but can be exploited with deeply nested queries.
N+1 problem in GraphQL: naive implementations execute database queries for each nested field. DataLoader batches and caches database queries within a request to prevent N+1 performance issues.
Schema design for GraphQL: design schemas around client needs, not database structure. Use connections for lists (with pagination), input types for mutations, and interfaces for polymorphic types.
Implementation complexity: REST APIs are simpler to build and maintain. GraphQL adds schema management, resolver implementation, and query complexity limits. This complexity must be justified by client needs.
Hybrid approaches: use REST for simple CRUD and public APIs, and GraphQL for complex internal APIs with flexible data needs. Both can coexist in the same application serving different use cases.
