Internationalization (i18n) is the process of designing software so it can be adapted to various languages and regions. Localization (l10n) is the actual adaptation for a specific locale.

Plan i18n from the start. Retrofitting internationalization into an existing codebase is 5-10x more expensive than building it in from the beginning. Even if you launch in one language, prepare the architecture.

i18n libraries: next-intl (Next.js), react-i18next (React), and FormatJS/react-intl (React). These libraries handle translation loading, interpolation, pluralization, and formatting.

Translation file structure: organize by language (en.json, fr.json, de.json) with nested keys by feature area. Keep translation keys descriptive: 'checkout.shipping.freeShippingMessage' not 'msg_42'.

Pluralization: different languages have different plural rules. English has 2 forms (1 item, 2 items). Russian has 3. Arabic has 6. Use ICU message format for proper pluralization across languages.

Date and number formatting: use Intl.DateTimeFormat and Intl.NumberFormat for locale-aware formatting. Never hardcode date formats (MM/DD vs DD/MM) or number separators (1,000 vs 1.000).

Right-to-left (RTL) support: Arabic, Hebrew, and other RTL languages require layout mirroring. Use CSS logical properties (margin-inline-start instead of margin-left) for automatic RTL adaptation.

Translation management: services like Crowdin, Lokalise, and Phrase manage translation workflows, provide translator tools, and sync translations with your codebase through CI/CD integration.

Content length variation: translations can be 30-40% longer than English text. Design UI with flexible layouts that accommodate longer text without breaking. German and Finnish are notably longer than English.

Testing i18n: use pseudolocalization (replacing text with accented characters and expanded strings) to identify hardcoded strings and layout issues before actual translation begins.
