Real-time web features deliver data to users instantly without page refreshes. Chat messages, notifications, live dashboards, collaborative editing, and live sports scores all require real-time data delivery.

WebSockets: persistent, bidirectional connections between client and server. Both sides can send messages at any time. Best for interactive features like chat, gaming, and collaborative tools.

Server-Sent Events (SSE): one-directional stream from server to client over HTTP. Simpler than WebSockets, automatic reconnection, works through proxies. Best for notifications, live feeds, and dashboard updates.

Polling comparison: short polling (repeated HTTP requests every N seconds) is simplest but wasteful. Long polling (server holds request until data is available) reduces requests but adds complexity. Both are inferior to WebSockets/SSE for true real-time.

Socket.io: the most popular WebSocket library for Node.js. Provides automatic fallback to long polling, room-based broadcasting, and event-based API. Simplifies WebSocket development significantly.

Real-time databases: Supabase Realtime, Firebase Realtime Database, and Convex provide real-time data synchronization out of the box. Changes in the database automatically push to connected clients.

Scaling real-time: WebSocket connections are stateful, complicating horizontal scaling. Use Redis Pub/Sub or a dedicated message broker to distribute messages across multiple server instances.

Collaborative editing: real-time collaborative features (like Google Docs) use Conflict-free Replicated Data Types (CRDTs) or Operational Transformation (OT). Libraries like Yjs and Automerge implement CRDTs for JavaScript.

Presence and awareness: show who is online, where their cursor is, and what they are editing. Presence features make real-time applications feel alive and social. Implement with heartbeat messages and timeout detection.

Performance considerations: each WebSocket connection consumes server memory. Plan for maximum concurrent connections. Implement connection pooling, message compression, and graceful degradation when server capacity is reached.
