Serverless computing runs code without managing servers. Cloud providers handle provisioning, scaling, and maintenance. You pay only for actual execution time, not idle server capacity.

Serverless platforms: AWS Lambda (most mature), Vercel Serverless Functions (simplest for Next.js), Cloudflare Workers (edge-first), and Google Cloud Functions. Each has different runtime limits and pricing models.

Use cases for serverless: API endpoints, webhooks, scheduled tasks, file processing, and event-driven workflows. Serverless excels for variable workloads with unpredictable traffic patterns.

Cold starts: serverless functions take 100-500ms to initialize when not recently used. This latency matters for user-facing APIs. Mitigation strategies include provisioned concurrency, lighter runtimes, and edge functions.

Edge functions: run serverless code at CDN edge locations worldwide. Sub-10ms latency for geographically distributed users. Ideal for personalization, A/B testing, and authentication checks.

Database considerations: serverless functions create many short-lived database connections. Connection pooling (PgBouncer, Prisma Accelerate) prevents database connection exhaustion.

File storage: serverless functions are stateless. Store files in object storage (S3, Cloudflare R2), use CDN for static assets, and manage sessions in Redis or database rather than server memory.

Cost analysis: serverless is cost-effective for low-to-moderate traffic. At high sustained traffic (millions of requests/day), dedicated servers may be cheaper. Model costs at your expected scale.

Testing serverless applications: test functions locally with framework-specific tools (Vercel CLI, SAM CLI). Integration tests should verify cold start behavior, timeout handling, and error responses.

When not to use serverless: long-running processes (functions have execution time limits), applications requiring persistent connections (WebSockets), and workloads with consistent, high utilization where server pricing is more efficient.
