React state management has evolved. Redux's complexity drove the creation of simpler alternatives. In 2025, most applications do not need Redux. Simpler tools cover the vast majority of use cases.
useState: local component state for UI interactions. Toggle states, form inputs, and component-specific data. The simplest and most appropriate tool for most state needs.
useReducer: complex state logic within a component. When state transitions depend on previous state or multiple related values need to update together. Useful for form state and multi-step workflows.
Context API: sharing state across component trees without prop drilling. Best for infrequently changing values: theme, authentication, locale, and feature flags. Not ideal for frequently changing state (causes unnecessary re-renders).
Zustand: minimal, fast state management. Simple API (create store, use hook), no boilerplate, and excellent performance. The default recommendation for client-side state beyond component level.
Jotai: atomic state management inspired by Recoil. Individual atoms hold small pieces of state. Derived atoms compute values from other atoms. Great for fine-grained reactivity and bottom-up state composition.
TanStack Query (React Query): server state management for API data. Handles caching, refetching, pagination, optimistic updates, and error states. Eliminates 90% of manual loading/error state management.
Zustand vs Jotai: Zustand for store-based state (single store, multiple slices). Jotai for atom-based state (many independent pieces). Zustand is simpler for most cases; Jotai offers finer control.
When you actually need Redux: very large applications with complex state interactions, when you need time-travel debugging, or when your team has deep Redux expertise. Redux Toolkit dramatically reduces boilerplate.
State management decision tree: is it server data? Use TanStack Query. Is it local to one component? Use useState. Shared across a few components? Lift state. Shared globally? Use Zustand or Context.
