Animation serves functional purposes: providing feedback (button press), guiding attention (notification), showing relationships (expanding cards), and creating continuity (page transitions). Decorative animation without purpose adds noise.

CSS animations for simple effects: transitions for hover states, transforms for movement and scaling, and @keyframes for complex sequences. CSS animations are hardware-accelerated and perform well.

Framer Motion for React: the most popular React animation library. Declarative API with animate prop, layout animations, gesture support, and exit animations. Excellent developer experience.

GSAP (GreenSock): the most powerful web animation library. ScrollTrigger for scroll-based animations, complex timelines, and morphing. Best for marketing sites with sophisticated animation requirements.

Performance rules: animate only transform and opacity (GPU-accelerated). Avoid animating width, height, top, left, and margin (trigger layout recalculation). Use will-change sparingly to hint GPU acceleration.

60fps target: animations should run at 60 frames per second (16.67ms per frame). Use browser DevTools Performance panel to identify frames exceeding this budget. Reduce animation complexity for slow devices.

Reduced motion: respect the prefers-reduced-motion media query. Users with vestibular disorders experience nausea from motion. Provide static alternatives or simplified animations for these users.

Animation timing: use ease-out for elements entering the screen (fast start, gentle landing). Use ease-in for elements leaving (slow departure, quick exit). Linear motion feels mechanical and unnatural.

Scroll-triggered animations: reveal content as users scroll with intersection observer or ScrollTrigger. Stagger animations for lists and grids. Keep scroll animations subtle; aggressive scroll hijacking frustrates users.

Loading animations: skeleton screens and shimmer effects provide better perceived performance than spinners. Show the page structure immediately and fill content as it loads.
